CALGARY, AB –(HAUNTED CALGARY PRODUCTIONS INC.)--  As millions of Canadians wonder what’s in store for Halloween 2020, Haunted Calgary is gearing up to bring a brand new type of Halloween experience to New Horizon Mall in Balzac, between Calgary and Airdrie.

The COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t scare away these die-hard haunters, but the thought of hosting their traditional walk-through haunted attraction just didn’t seem possible.  With the safety of volunteer actors, staff, and guests as management’s top priority, they felt that people in close contact, large crowds, and screaming just weren’t going to be an option for Halloween 2020.  While prepared to shut down for the season if they needed to, Haunted Calgary decided to innovate.

“The spirit of Halloween can’t be killed,” says Christine Campbell, Creative Director of Haunted Calgary.  “It’s just going to look a little different this year and I’m so excited to try a drive-in format for Haunted Calgary this year.  Our actors have always been the stars of Haunted Calgary and these shows are going to put them in the spotlight.”

Drive-in and drive-through attractions have started to pop up around the world in light of the pandemic, notably one from Japan which went viral in July and a few high-profile events in the US.  But The Devil’s Drive-In will be the first such attraction in Calgary, Alberta, and the organizers believe even in Canada.   Haunted Calgary’s unique approach will be a choice of four 7-minute theatrical productions which will be performed around the guest’s vehicle, immersing them in something that is half live haunt and half immersive horror movie.

The entire event has been designed specifically to keep Haunted Calgary’s “Scary Safe Promise” to both guests and volunteers/staff.  Guests will enjoy the experience from the safety of their own vehicles with windows rolled up, buy their tickets online without contact, wait in a virtual queue for their assigned ticket time to limit numbers, and they’ll be treated to an exclusive private show.  Actors will work more than 6’ apart, with masks, sanitizer, daily health screens, and cohort groups.  The only thing scary about this experience is the show!

This unique Halloween experience allows guests to choose from one of four storylines, including one family-friendly show and three mature themes.  A $50 ticket will get one vehicle in for the show, and that vehicle can hold as many people from the same cohort as it has seatbelts.  People wanting an extra scare may want to go it alone for a totally private experience.  Guests can customize their experience with a full immersion add-on for another $50, which includes a commemorative photo after a more extreme scare and their vehicle being given an “extra blood” treatment.

The event opens Saturday, October 10 at New Horizon Mall in Balzac and will take place in the underground parkade.  Tickets can be purchased at www.hauntedcalgary.org, but they’re extremely limited and expected to sell out, so organizers recommend that you don’t delay.
